The Sehome boys' basketball team didn't do itself any favors missing 22 free throws to a visiting Mount Baker team hungry for its first Northwest Conference victory on Thursday, Jan. 5.
Even with the struggles from the line, the Mariners still found a way to continue its unbeaten streak in conference play, defeating Mount Baker 67-64, as they improved to 8-3 and 4-0 in the NWC.
Gabe Sanchez led Sehome with 14 points as his 3-point shooting helped bring the Mariners back from an early deficit. He made four of the team's eight shots from behind the arc. Noah Cyr-Moore added 13 points.
The efforts of Cyr-Moore and Sanchez helped mask Sehome's free throw shooting woes. It made just 15 of 37.
"That's a big red light to me," Sehome boys' basketball coach A.J. LaBree said in a phone interview. "We need to convert those opportunities to win games. But we managed to fight through some adversity and pull it out."
"We'll take any league win we can get, in any fashion."
Sehome trailed by two points entering the fourth quarter, but pulled it out to send Mount Baker to 2-9 overall and 0-4 in the NWC.
Addison King led the Mountaineers with 16 points, while Blake Compton added 14, including four 3-pointers.
Mount Baker hosts Anacortes next at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, while Sehome travels to Meridian at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10.
