Sanchez' shot saves Sehome's season
PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Sanchez' shot saves Sehome's season
TJ COTTERILL - THE BELLINGHAM HERALD
MOUNT VERNON — If it isn’t clear who the go-to player is for the Sehome boys’ basketball team, Gabe Sanchez clarified.
In doing so, he kept the Mariners’ season going for at least one more game.
Sanchez’ drained a free throw line jumper as the time expired to lift Sehome to a 42-40 victory against Archbishop Murphy in the first round of consolation in the Class 2A District Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Skagit Valley College, and keep its season alive.
Sehome’s Drew Ronson scrambled to collect a rebound after Archbishop Murphy’s Dan Haider missed his free throw on an and-1 play to keep the game tied at 40-40. Coach A.J. LaBree immediately called a timeout with less than 12 seconds remaining.
Though the Mariners have relied on depth all season, the situation called for a go-to scorer.
“Gabe is our quickest player and he gave us the best chance to create something for us,” LaBree said. “We wanted to get him one on one. He did a good job of getting down the court, shaking his guy, creating some room and knocking it down.”
Ronson inbounded the ball from underneath the Archbishop Murphy basket and looked to run the play set up for Sanchez. The Wildcats denied Sanchez the ball and Ronson instead found a cutting Konstantin Andrushenko.
Sanchez cut toward Andrushenko and got himself open for the ball. He quickly turned up the court with his right hand, but the Wildcat defender cut him off at half court. Without losing any speed, Sanchez shook the defender with a behind the back dribble to his left hand, raced his way to the free throw line and pulled up for the leaning jumper with just one second left.
It was nothing but net.
“I knew I was going to take that shot,” Sanchez said. “I just had to get myself open. I just felt that the clock was about to run out so I let it go.”
Sanchez was then chased to half court and mobbed by his teammates. Andrushenko tackled him and the rest of the team jumped, yelled and celebrated around him.
“I was so happy,” Sanchez said of his first ever game-winning shot. “I felt like Austin Rivers out there.”
While Rivers hit a game-winning shot on Feb. 8 to help Duke beat North Carolina, it wasn’t one that kept his team’s season alive — or stop a four-game losing streak.
The Mariners entered the game struggling to find a win. While they had success early in the season, they had lost five of their past six games and all by double-digits. They had allowed almost 67 points in the five losses and were certainly looking to get back to the defense that allowed them to start the season 10-3.
Sehome’s defensive performance Tuesday was one of its better displays of the season. It was two points more than the fewest points any team has scored on it all season and it started with its full court press. The Mariners forced 14 turnovers in the first half and 22 for the game.
“We really wanted to get out and force turnovers,” LaBree said. “We just had a tough time converting on the turnovers though. We wanted to use those to get out, run and get easy baskets but we couldn’t quite finish them.”
Most of that had to do with Archbishop Murphy’s length on the low block. The 6-foot-8 Zach Gordon finished the game with 16 rebounds with five blocked shots, while challenged a lot more.
But with 17 seconds left in the third quarter and Sehome leading 33-31, Gordon was called for his third foul, which sent Noah Cyr-Moore to the free-throw line. Gordon was then handed a technical foul after arguing the call, giving him four fouls. He was brought out of the game, giving Sehome an opportunity to capitalize on his absence.
Cyr=Moore made three of four free throws as the Mariners went up 38-32 before Gordon returned to the game with a little more than five minutes left.
Archbishop Murphy rallied back from there. With 23 seconds left, the Wildcats pulled to within two points of the lead and Gordon at the free-throw line with a 1-and-1 with a chance to tie it up. He missed the shot, but collected the rebound and somehow found teammate Dan Haider, who powered through Evan Miksovsky’s foul for the bucket and the foul.
However, Haider missed the free throw and Ronson collected the rebound after a short scramble to set up Sanchez’ game-winning heroics.
Sehome was 1 for 12 from the floor in the fourth quarter until Sanchez hit his shot to win the game.
“Defensively we were getting after it,” Archbishop Murphy coach Jamar Williams said. “Both these teams really battled tonight. We had an opportunity there at the end, but a great player just made a great shot.”
Sanchez finished with a team-high 13 points with four rebounds and a pair of steals. Andrushenko had 10 points. Sehome will next face Lynden at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at Mount Vernon High School, after the Lions fell to Squalicum 51-43 in the semifinals of the district tournament Tuesday.
The loser of Thursday’s game will see its season end. But after the Mariners finally put an end to its losing skid by overcoming a loser-out situation Tuesday, LaBree is looking forward to seeing the momentum continue.
“That is going to be a really tough game but we are just happy to have the opportunity now,” LaBree said. “Hopefully this will give us some confidence. It was good to see our kids fight through some adversity. For us to win in the fashion we did, hopefully this will carry over into the next round.”
