PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Meridian hands Mariners first conference loss

PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Meridian hands Mariners first conference loss
Sports Desk - THE BELLINGHAM HERALD

Tait Slesk scored a game-high 15 points and the Meridian boys' basketball team ended Sehome's seven game winning streak and gave it its first Northwest Conference loss this season with a 41-36 victory on the road on Tuesday, Jan. 11.

Sehome's 36 points was its lowest point total against any opponent this season. The Mariners made 26 percent of their shots, while going 2-27 from the 3-point line.

"You're not going to win too many games with that kind of percentage," Sehome coach A.J. LaBree said in a phone interview. "(Meridian) played solid defense and we just couldn't put the ball in the hole."

Despite the poor shooting, Sehome had possession with the score tied at 36-36 with less than a minute to go, until Meridian's Zach Slesk got a steal and dribbled the length of the court before connecting on a layup on the other end, through contact, and making his free-throw. Sehome was unable to capitalize on any of its next possessions as Meridian earned the win.

Sehome (10-2, 4-1 NWC) will be traveling to Bellingham its next game, while Meridian (6-6, 2-3) hosts Sedro-Woolley at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14.
