PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Weary Sehome falls to Sequim

LYNDEN - Oftentimes, an emotional, energy-draining win can lead to a letdown the following night and, unfortunately for the Sehome boys' basketball team, Sequim was more than happy to take advantage of an exhausted bunch of Mariners. Following a narrow victory over Class 4A Edmonds-Woodway Wednesday night, Sehome lacked energy against Sequim and paid for it with a 55-52 loss Thursday, Dec. 29, on the final day of the Cloud 9 Sports Lynden Christmas Classic, at Lynden Christian High School. "I thought Sequim brought a lot of energy, and they just about beat us in every facet of the game," Sehome coach AJ LaBree said. "It was our second game in two days and when we have success is when we have a lot of energy. Overall, it wasn't our best performance."Sehome shot 37 percent from the floor and converted a lowly 3 of 15 free-throw attempts. The Mariners were led by Noah Cyr-Moore, who scored a team-high 10 points and handed out a team-high three assists. "We were kind of out of it," Cyr-Moore said. "We got off to a slow start and didn't give too much effort." The Mariners trailed 26-22 at the break, but Sequim exerted itself in the third, as Wolves Corbin Webb, Gabe Carter and Jayson Brocklesby combined for 18 third quarter points. Meanwhile, the Mariners (6-3, 2-0 NWC) shot 5 of 15 from the field during the third and allowed Sequim to establish an insurmountable 44-34 advantage heading into the fourth. Sehome worked valiantly to chip away at the Wolves' lead and, after a late Lawrence Strasser layup, cut Sequim's advantage to 54-50. But, Sehome dug itself into too deep of a hole and couldn't complete the comeback bid. "Against a quality opponent, we knew we'd have to play well to beat them," LaBree said. "Their zone gave us a lot of problems, because we couldn't shoot today." One bright spot for the Mariners was the play of guard Evan Miksovsky. The sophomore came off the bench and gave good minutes, scoring eight points, as well as pulling down three boards. "I would say the guy I noticed was Evan Miksovsky," LaBree said. "He came off the bench to make some big plays for the most part." Cyr-Moore was the lone Sehome scorer to reach double digit points. Drew Ronson and Miksovsky each had eight. Konstantin Andrushenko scored five points for the Mariners and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Sequim was led in scoring by Brocklesby, who recorded a game-high 16 points. Carter scored 13 points and hauled in a game-high 14 rebounds.

Sehome's next game is against Burlington-Edison at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2, at Burlington-Edison High School. Reach Andrew Lang at andrew.lang@bellinghamherald.com or call 360-756-2862.
