PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Sehome cruises to 56-42 win over Lynden Christian

PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Sehome cruises to 56-42 win over Lynden Christian
Sports Desk - THE BELLINGHAM HERALD

John Albert had 14 points and Colin Peterson had 12 points to lead the Sehome boys' basketball team to a 56-42 Northwest Conference victory against Lynden Christian on Thursday, Jan. 27, at Lynden Christian.

Sehome's defense kept the Lyncs in check nearly the entire game as LC shot just more than 28 percent from the field.

"Sehome's athletisism and defensive pressure was just too much for us tonight," LC coach Roger DeBoer said in a phone interview. "The did a fantastic job defensively on us. They did a good job of giving us different looks all night and I was really impressed with the job they did with their ball pressure."

LC (11-6, 4-6 NWC) was led by Joey Spoelstra's nine points, while Isaac Reimer was held to as season-low six points. DeBoer said that statistic was a complete attribute to what the Mariners (14-3, 8-2) were doing defensively.

The Mariners will be hosting Mount Vernon its next game, while Lynden Christian travels to Bellingham at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1.

PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Sehome rally downs Lynden

PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Sehome rally downs Lynden
TJ Cotterill - THE BELLINGHAM HERALD

BELLINGHAM - Colin Peterson had 14 points, Danny Stonedahl had 13 points and the Sehome boys' basketball team completed a fourth-quarter rally to defeat Lynden 49-43 in a Northwest Conference victory at home on Monday, Jan. 24, to extend the Lions' losing streak to four games.

Lynden began the fourth quarter with a 35-31 lead and led 39-35 midway into the quarter before Sehome's John Albert connected on three of his seven points and made a pair of free-throws the Mariners' next possession to give his team a 40-39 lead with just less than three minutes left in the game.

Albert's five points sparked a 12-1 run over the next two and a half minutes by the Mariners, as Lynden shot 0 for 6 during the stretch before Josh Kraght made a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left. The 3-pointer cut Sehome's lead to 47-43, but Peterson made two free-throws on the ensuing possession to secure the Mariners' seventh NWC win of the season.

Lynden started off the game on a 9-0 run and led 16-13 at halftime. Sehome stepped up its offense in the second half, outscoring Lynden 36-27.

"We finally started making some shots," Sehome coach A.J. LaBree said about the second half. "We were able to adjust to their zone and get some scoring going. To come out against Lynden, who is as good as anybody on any given night, and beat them gives us all the confidence in the world."

Lynden's Jake DeWitt, who leads Lynden with a 16.5 points per game average, was held to eight points - one field goal and six free-throws. After having two straight games of scoring 20 points or more, DeWitt has been averaging a little more than nine points per game his last five games since.

The 6-foot-5 Peterson guarded DeWitt for most of the night and seemed to bother him with his length.
"We talk about Peterson's offense a lot and tonight he did a great job defensively on DeWitt," LaBree said. "Colin said he wanted to guard him and I said, 'Hey, if you want that kind of challenge, when we go man he is yours."

"Lengthwise, it's easier for me to guard people who pull up and Jake is an excellent player," Peterson said. "He has a great shot and great moves and I felt like I played him just fine."
Lynden has now dropped its last four games after winning six consecutive games prior to the losing streak. Lynden's defense played better in this game, but it had struggled over the last three games. Lynden gave up a season-high 59 points in its game on Dec. 15, then gave up a new season-high of 62 points in each of its next two games.

The Lions (11-5, 5-4 NWC) have been giving up and average of just under 57 points during the losing streak, while it gives up less than 48 points in its 11 wins this season.

"I know that our guys are working hard to get out of the funk we are in right now and the time is now if we are going to get out of it," Lynden coach Brian Roper said. "I think we are frustrated, but we are committed to working hard. The key is to channel that frustration into doing positive things on the court and in practice and I think that our guys are going to do that."

Lynden will have another chance to get out of its funk, but will have to do so against Anacortes, who is currently tied for the top spot in the NWC standings with a record of 7-1. That game will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at Lynden.

Sehome (13-3, 7-2) will go on the road to take on Lynden Christian its next game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at Lynden Christian.

PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Defense leads Sehome past Blaine
Sports Desk - THE BELLINGHAM HERALD

Defense was the key of the game for the Sehome boys' basketball team and it held on to defeat Blaine 51-42 in Northwest Conference action on Friday, Jan. 21, at Sehome.

The Mariners (12-3, 6-2 NWC) limited the Borderites to three points in the first quarter and 10 points in the first half. Sehome led 26-10 at halftime.

"Our defense played at a really high level," Sehome coach A.J. LaBree said in a phone interview.

Colin Peterson led the Mariners with 16 points while Charlie Linneman and John Albert each had nine points.

Blaine (2-13, 0-8 NWC), which rallied to score 21 points in the third quarter, was led by Andrew Price's 16 points.

Sehome will host Lynden in its next game at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, while Blaine hosts Meridian at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25.

PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Mariners stumble against Anacortes

PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Mariners stumble against Anacortes
Sports Desk - THE BELLINGHAM HERALD

Sehome started slow and couldn't recover, falling 65-42 to Anacortes in a Northwest Conference boys' basketball game on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Both teams entered the contest 5-1 in league, but the Seahawks, who were led by Jackson Kirkpatrick's 24 points, jumped out to a 20-10 lead after the first quarter, and a 39-17 advantage by half.
The Mariners' first-quarter woes included a 1 for 10 performance from the free throw line.
"For whatever reason we were flat and not prepared to play tonight," Sehome coach A.J. LaBree said in a phone interview, "and it cost us big-time."

Sehome (11-3, 5-2 NWC) got a team-high 21 points from Colin Peterson, including three 3-pointers, and played Anacortes (10-4, 6-1 NWC) evenly in the second half. But that wasn't near enough against a sharp Seahawks squad.

"They were just a step quicker in everything they did out there," LaBree said.
Sehome will be hosting Blaine next at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 21.

PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Mariners edge Red Raiders

PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Mariners edge Red Raiders
MICHELLE NOLAN - THE BELLINGHAM HERALD

BELLINGHAM - All-county soccer defender Geordie Marriner responded in humble fashion when asked what his basketball scoring average is.

"Not very much," Sehome's quick 5-foot-11 senior guard responded with a joyful grin.
Marriner, a first-year starter who is primarily in the lineup for defensive excellence and leadership, turned in what he acknowledged was the game of his life to help the Mariners claim a wild 67-65 victory over host Bellingham on Friday, Jan. 14.

Marriner shot 6 for 9 from the field and tied for team scoring honors with 14 points, more than double his average.

Marriner and Sehome coach A.J. LaBree acknowledged the shot of the game was by senior scoring leader Colin Peterson - what LaBree called a "real gutsy" long 3-pointer for a 64-60 lead with one minute and 10 seconds to play.

"We have lots of guys who can score, so that opened it up for me tonight," said Marriner, who wasn't about to take much of the credit. "But I'm a soccer guy. I've signed a binder commitment to attend Pomona and I'll play soccer there. I'm just having a lot of fun with our basketball team, since we have a lot of guys (seven seniors) who have played together for a long time."
Bellingham (5-8, 1-5 Northwest Conference) rallied to take a 54-45 lead with one minute left in the third quarter, but the quicker Mariners (11-2, 5-1) went on a 16-2 run before Bellingham's Alex Check and Myles Ayers scored to cut Sehome's advantage to 61-60.

Then came Peterson's big moment.

"We have several guys who aren't afraid to step up and take the big shot, like Colin's 3-pointer," said LaBree. "That was really a pretty gutsy shot."

As for Marriner, LaBree was happy to see the soccer star finally play full speed ahead.
"Geordie likes to slow the game down, and I've been trying to convince him he's at his best when he speeds up the game," said LaBree. "He's a pretty good team manager, but we like him to play at a fast pace."

Bellingham received outstanding efforts from 6-5 senior center Ayers, who shot 9 for 16 and finished with game highs of 21 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and two blocks, and Check, who went 9 for 18 for 20 points in one of the sophomores top efforts.

Sehome, as usual, prospered with its balance. Senior guard John Albert had 14 points and six of the Mariners' 17 steals, while Peterson went 5 for 9 for 12 points and sophomore forward Charlie Linneman had 13 points and nine rebounds while matching Peterson with three steals.

Ayers grabbed eight offensive rebounds and scored on five of them to lead Bellingham's 49-28 rebound advantage, including almost as many offensive rebounds (24) as Sehome had total rebounds.
"But we forced 25 turnovers, and that's the eighth game in a row where we've forced at least 20 turnovers," said LaBree.

During Sehome's late-game run, Bellingham was called for two technicals - including an ejection for coach Mark Wright - and Linneman made three of four free throws. LaBree showed a lot of confidence in the 6-3 sophomore by sending him to the line for the free throws, which cut Bellingham's lead to 54-52.

Albert then shot a 3-pointer from the corner, Marriner scored on a drive and Albert scored on both a rebound and a pass from Kevin Virk after Virk's steal, giving Sehome a 61-56 lead.
Following Peterson's game-turning 3-pointer, Linneman made one free throw and Albert sank two to offset late baskets by Dan East and Check. The Raiders then stole the inbounds pass and Jared Wells made a free throw with half a second left, but all the Mariners had to do was make a long inbounds pass to end the game.

PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Meridian hands Mariners first conference loss

PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Meridian hands Mariners first conference loss
Sports Desk - THE BELLINGHAM HERALD

Tait Slesk scored a game-high 15 points and the Meridian boys' basketball team ended Sehome's seven game winning streak and gave it its first Northwest Conference loss this season with a 41-36 victory on the road on Tuesday, Jan. 11.

Sehome's 36 points was its lowest point total against any opponent this season. The Mariners made 26 percent of their shots, while going 2-27 from the 3-point line.

"You're not going to win too many games with that kind of percentage," Sehome coach A.J. LaBree said in a phone interview. "(Meridian) played solid defense and we just couldn't put the ball in the hole."

Despite the poor shooting, Sehome had possession with the score tied at 36-36 with less than a minute to go, until Meridian's Zach Slesk got a steal and dribbled the length of the court before connecting on a layup on the other end, through contact, and making his free-throw. Sehome was unable to capitalize on any of its next possessions as Meridian earned the win.

Sehome (10-2, 4-1 NWC) will be traveling to Bellingham its next game, while Meridian (6-6, 2-3) hosts Sedro-Woolley at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14.

PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Sehome wins seventh straight, 73-59 over Mount Baker
Sports Desk - THE BELLINGHAM HERALD

Charlie Linneman had a season-high 23 points after having no more than nine points in any previous game to lead the Sehome boys' basketball team to a 73-59 Northwest Conference victory over Mount Baker on the road Friday, Jan. 7.

The Mariners came out in the first quarter firing offensively and built a 32-13 lead by the start of the second quarter. The Mountaineers made rallied back later in the game, but Sehome's early lead ended up being too much to overcome.

"We really jumped out on them early and the big start helped a lot," Sehome coach A.J. Labree said in a phone interview. "Getting off to such a hot start and getting them in that big of a hole was the key to the game."

Mount Baker's Zach Stalin led the team with 19 points and Chris Tanis had 12 points. Sehome's Colin Peterson had 12 points and teammate Kevin Virk had four points and more than six offensive rebounds for his sixth consecutive game.

Mount Baker (7-4, 2-2 NWC) will take to the road to play Anacortes its next game at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, while Sehome (10-1, 4-0) hosts Meridian at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11.

PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Peterson's steal, lay-up help Sehome surprise Burlington

PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Peterson's steal, lay-up help Sehome surprise Burlington
DAVID RASBACH - THE BELLINGHAM HERALD

BELLINGHAM - After playing on the Sehome varsity baseball team the past two springs, Colin Peterson understands the Mariners' rivalry against Burlington-Edison.

While the Sehome baseball team has been able to hold its own against the Tigers, recently, the boys' basketball team entered a Northwest Conference showdown between the two schools on Monday, Jan. 3, having lost seven of the past eight meetings.
"I hate losing, and I really don't like losing to Burlington-Edison," Peterson said. "I can't stand it. I know there were a lot of old fans up in the stands that understand this rivalry ... and they wanted to see us win this game."

Peterson did his best to send the Mariner faithful home happy, stealing a pass at the top of the key and taking it the length of the court for a lay-up with eight seconds to play to give the Mariners a 44-42 victory. The winning bucket gave Peterson a game-high 16 points, 14 of which came during a second half that saw the Mariners claw their way back into the game after trailing by as many as 13.
Though Sehome (9-1, 3-0 NWC) did get a non-conference win over Burlington-Edison during the 2008-09 season, Monday's win was the Mariners' first Northwest Conference victory over the Tigers (8-2, 2-1) since the move to the 14-team conference before the 2006-07 season.

"Baseball's always been such a great rivalry with Burlington - that's why I like playing them so much," Peterson said. "And now, basketball's pretty good, too. It's great to see."
It looked like that basketball rivalry was going to continue to be rather one sided, as Burlington-Edison opened the second half on a 9-3 run to push a 25-18 halftime advantage to 13 points.

"A lot of our success this year has come because of our defense," Sehome coach A.J. LaBree said. "We were running a full-court, and they were handling it pretty well. So when we got down, we switched to a man-to-man that was pretty aggressive. We got some guys to shoot the gaps and get some turnovers and got them to hurry some shots, and it really ended up helping us."
Sehome ended up scoring the final 13 points of the third quarter to tie the game at 34 entering the fourth. Peterson got the run started by hitting a pull-up jumper in the lane with 4:24 to play in the period. After Danny Stonedahl hit off an assist from Titi Lamositele, Peterson nailed his second 3-pointer of the third to make it 34-28.

Geordie Marriner added a lay-up on the next possession, before Peterson scored on Sehome's final two possessions of the quarter to tie it up.
"Our intensity (really made the difference," Peterson said. "We took care of the ball and really played like we wanted this one. We have a number of seniors that really wanted to win tonight."
Sehome continued to show that hunger into the fourth quarter, when John Albert hit 3-pointers on back-to-back trips down the floor to put Sehome up 40-34. Albert's second 3 came on Sehome's fifth shot attempt of the possession, as reserve Kevin Virk and Albert combined to grab four offensive rebounds.

Despite being at a noticeable height disadvantage, the Mariners outrebounded Burlington 19-15 in the second half and got seven offensive rebounds.
"We just outhustled them," Peterson said. "Just because you're shorter doesn't mean you can't outhustle them and block out, and that's what we did tonight."
A jumper from Marriner after another offensive rebound put Sehome up 42-34 with 3:13 to play.
But Burlington-Edison, which had gone 0 for 15 during an 11:28 span through the third and fourth, finally broke through when Will Stewart collected a long rebound of a missed 3 and hit a jumper with 2:08 to play. That started a 6-0 run by the Tigers, thanks in part to four Sehome turnovers in the final two minutes. Nathan Haddock's lay-up with 51 seconds to play tied it up at 42.
After the two teams traded turnovers, Peterson stepped into a Tigers passing and tipped the ball to himself for the steal. He then raced to the other end of the court, avoided a Burlington defender and hit the game-winning lay-up.

"I just made a read and shot the gap to get the pass," Peterson said.
Virk made the lead stand with a steal to end the Tigers' next possession, when Sehome's pressure defense at the 3-point arc forced Jordan Garcia to make a errant pass as time expired.
Albert finished with nine points and 11 rebounds, while Virk had eight rebounds and Peterson added seven. Burlington got 12 points from Jordan Reed and eight points and eight rebounds from Eric Walser.

"This is a big win, but it's just one win," LaBree said. "We're just taking it one game at a time this year. We're trying to bring the program back, and there are a lot of good teams in this conference. Mount Baker's going to be a tough one (in Sehome's next game on Thursday, Jan. 7, at Deming), and we've got to come ready to play that one. But beating Burlington is a pretty big win for us. Burlington is going to beat a number of teams this year."

Colin Peterson scored 19 points on 8 of 10 shooting, while collecting six rebounds and four assists to lead the Sehome boys' basketball team to a lopsided 67-52 victory over Arlington in a non-conference game on Thursday, Dec. 30, at the Cloud 9 Lynden Invitational.

Sehome jumped out to a 16-6 lead after the first quarter and went on to build itself a 27-point lead at one point in the third quarter.

"I couldn't be more pleased with how we played against a quality opponent like Arlington," Sehome coach AJ LaBree said in a phone interview. "The guys executed and our depth just took over the game for us."

The Mariners beat Arlington 31-19 in rebounds and had eight less turnovers. Sehome's Kevin Virk had 11 points and six rebounds and teammate John Albert had 10 points including six points from the 3-point line.

"We won the battle of the boards and the turnover battle," LaBree said. "You win those and you are going to see the result on the scoreboard like tonight."

Sehome will host Burlington-Edison its next game at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3.
