PREP BOYS' BASKETBALL: Peterson's steal, lay-up help Sehome surprise Burlington
DAVID RASBACH - THE BELLINGHAM HERALD
BELLINGHAM - After playing on the Sehome varsity baseball team the past two springs, Colin Peterson understands the Mariners' rivalry against Burlington-Edison.
While the Sehome baseball team has been able to hold its own against the Tigers, recently, the boys' basketball team entered a Northwest Conference showdown between the two schools on Monday, Jan. 3, having lost seven of the past eight meetings.
"I hate losing, and I really don't like losing to Burlington-Edison," Peterson said. "I can't stand it. I know there were a lot of old fans up in the stands that understand this rivalry ... and they wanted to see us win this game."
Peterson did his best to send the Mariner faithful home happy, stealing a pass at the top of the key and taking it the length of the court for a lay-up with eight seconds to play to give the Mariners a 44-42 victory. The winning bucket gave Peterson a game-high 16 points, 14 of which came during a second half that saw the Mariners claw their way back into the game after trailing by as many as 13.
Though Sehome (9-1, 3-0 NWC) did get a non-conference win over Burlington-Edison during the 2008-09 season, Monday's win was the Mariners' first Northwest Conference victory over the Tigers (8-2, 2-1) since the move to the 14-team conference before the 2006-07 season.
"Baseball's always been such a great rivalry with Burlington - that's why I like playing them so much," Peterson said. "And now, basketball's pretty good, too. It's great to see."
It looked like that basketball rivalry was going to continue to be rather one sided, as Burlington-Edison opened the second half on a 9-3 run to push a 25-18 halftime advantage to 13 points.
"A lot of our success this year has come because of our defense," Sehome coach A.J. LaBree said. "We were running a full-court, and they were handling it pretty well. So when we got down, we switched to a man-to-man that was pretty aggressive. We got some guys to shoot the gaps and get some turnovers and got them to hurry some shots, and it really ended up helping us."
Sehome ended up scoring the final 13 points of the third quarter to tie the game at 34 entering the fourth. Peterson got the run started by hitting a pull-up jumper in the lane with 4:24 to play in the period. After Danny Stonedahl hit off an assist from Titi Lamositele, Peterson nailed his second 3-pointer of the third to make it 34-28.
Geordie Marriner added a lay-up on the next possession, before Peterson scored on Sehome's final two possessions of the quarter to tie it up.
"Our intensity (really made the difference," Peterson said. "We took care of the ball and really played like we wanted this one. We have a number of seniors that really wanted to win tonight."
Sehome continued to show that hunger into the fourth quarter, when John Albert hit 3-pointers on back-to-back trips down the floor to put Sehome up 40-34. Albert's second 3 came on Sehome's fifth shot attempt of the possession, as reserve Kevin Virk and Albert combined to grab four offensive rebounds.
Despite being at a noticeable height disadvantage, the Mariners outrebounded Burlington 19-15 in the second half and got seven offensive rebounds.
"We just outhustled them," Peterson said. "Just because you're shorter doesn't mean you can't outhustle them and block out, and that's what we did tonight."
A jumper from Marriner after another offensive rebound put Sehome up 42-34 with 3:13 to play.
But Burlington-Edison, which had gone 0 for 15 during an 11:28 span through the third and fourth, finally broke through when Will Stewart collected a long rebound of a missed 3 and hit a jumper with 2:08 to play. That started a 6-0 run by the Tigers, thanks in part to four Sehome turnovers in the final two minutes. Nathan Haddock's lay-up with 51 seconds to play tied it up at 42.
After the two teams traded turnovers, Peterson stepped into a Tigers passing and tipped the ball to himself for the steal. He then raced to the other end of the court, avoided a Burlington defender and hit the game-winning lay-up.
"I just made a read and shot the gap to get the pass," Peterson said.
Virk made the lead stand with a steal to end the Tigers' next possession, when Sehome's pressure defense at the 3-point arc forced Jordan Garcia to make a errant pass as time expired.
Albert finished with nine points and 11 rebounds, while Virk had eight rebounds and Peterson added seven. Burlington got 12 points from Jordan Reed and eight points and eight rebounds from Eric Walser.
"This is a big win, but it's just one win," LaBree said. "We're just taking it one game at a time this year. We're trying to bring the program back, and there are a lot of good teams in this conference. Mount Baker's going to be a tough one (in Sehome's next game on Thursday, Jan. 7, at Deming), and we've got to come ready to play that one. But beating Burlington is a pretty big win for us. Burlington is going to beat a number of teams this year."
